What do I get asked most often in my job? Lately, when facilitating an internal workshop session or making a presentation to the team, it’s been, “Rick, are you going to sing for us?” Here’s the story behind that question… In February, we recognized Hudson’s top sales performers at a posh resort in Cancun, Mexico.
As a member of our senior leadership team, I was asked to “MC” the awards banquet, and charged to add a bit of creativity to an otherwise mundane awards presentation and CEO handshake routine for the winners.
Drawing from one of my musical theatre favorites, I decided to sing for the group to open the evening - my first time ever in a public forum. Little did I realize, however, that one of our winners sitting right in the first row caught my entire performance on his phone video camera . . . and further, within 24 hours, had posted my crooner call to You Tube.
Not three days later, one of my esteemed colleagues had posted his reaction to my musical moment on his blog. And now I’ve got others claiming we should use the clip in Hudson’s website homepage video series to help express our culture and brand personality to the market. Wow.
Whatever transpires, if this gig doesn’t work out, maybe I have a shot as a wedding singer. Let me know if you agree.
