Dear IT Hiring Manager: Why Don’t You Call Back?

Caller ID and voicemail are the IT manager’s best friend. They allow you to ignore distracting calls to focus on the monumental tasks of your day. They also help you build a wall around your IT fortress to keep invading vendors away. As a manager myself, I understand that a call back just adds more clutter to your task list.

While picking up the phone seems aggravating, there is a potential upside in every discussion you have regarding your IT talent needs, especially when market conditions are tough. Take a minute to check out the most common excuses I hear for not returning a phone call, and the opportunity you may be missing.

5 Excuses For Not Discussing IT Talent With Hudson

  1. Excuse: “I have my staffing vendors who I use”
Potential Upside: Are they all doing THAT great for you?  If you have 5 favorites, at least one is likely under-performing.  Why not give Hudson IT a shot or at least a call back?
  2. Excuse: “I get calls from so many agencies each day I can’t call all of them back.”
Potential Upside: Your firm is on the radar, and competition is good. You are likely to benefit from better service and better quality candidates from those working to earn your business. Why not try chipping away at the masses? Keep a list and simply call back ONE different company every other day (2 minutes a day) and schedule a brief meeting with them to “interview” them on their process and capabilities. (10 - 30 minutes) Keep track about those you like and don’t like and what it is about their approach that will serve you well.
  3. Excuse: “You aren’t on our company vendor’s list.”
Potential Upside: Most companies’ IT staffing vendor lists are selected on lowest price, and not by quality and NOT by you who have the vested interest in getting the BEST, not the cheapest. When was the last time you bought the highest quality item at the lowest price point?
  4. Excuse:  I’m not in a hiring capacity.
Potential Upside: Ahh, but you’re always in a learning capacity. As a manager shouldn’t you need to be prepared to make decisions? To make GOOD decisions, you need knowledge and information. I’m happy to discuss the local IT market in Phoenix, AZ for instance. Use my daily discussions in the marketplace as free research for your project scoping, salaries, local talent availability or market conditions.
  5. Excuse: “I don’t need a staffing agency right now, why would I call back?”
Potential Upside:  You never know when the next great career opportunity could present itself to YOU.  You just got a voice message inviting you to call back and you can network openly for your career at your company or your next career move for yourself.
  6.

You hold the power to select your next new-hire, contractor, vendor OR the person you want representing you for your next career move.  Sounds like plenty of reason to give me a call back next time.
