The Web has changed the way we communicate, and part of the Web 2.0 revolution has been the integration of those changes in to the way we live our daily lives. No longer do we need to be near a computer to access the web - in fact, up to 25% of cell phone users now access the web using their mobile devices. Increasingly, our mobile devices provide a powerful personal connection and messaging conduit that modern organizations are tapping in to.
Through common formats such as SMS and MMS (Short Message Service & Multimedia Message Service), communication can be rapidly and inexpensively broadcast to mobile devices. Companies and organizations can build a trusted network of interested users, by encouraging interactivity and self sign-up using a centralized “Short Code“. Users send a message to the code, and are then added to the list.
Recently, the U.S. got to see SMS Marketing used by the Obama-Biden campaign to organize volunteers, deliver breaking news and drive voter registration. The campaign partnered with Quattro Wireless in Waltham Massachusetts to develop a state-of-the-art system for delivering geo-targeted messages to voters in battleground states.
By using an interactive SMS marketing system, the campaign was able to connect with and inform a demographic that has been challenging in the past: Young Voters.
