Interview Anxiety Strikes!

You are sitting in an interview. Your palms are sweating, your mouth is dry and all the sudden you have forgotten your name.

Interview anxiety strikes again.

It’s perfectly natural for one to get nervous on an interview but the best way of beating interview anxiety is to BE PREPARED! Begin your preparations by asking the right questions when the interview is set up.Who will I be interviewing with? What is their title /role in the company? What type of interview will this be (Personality? Technical?)

Be prepared to answer any questions that the interviewer throws at you by thinking about the questions they may ask ahead of time. Be prepared to answer questions concisely and thoroughly. Quintessential Careers has a list of great list of behavioral interviewing questions. Take a look at them and jot down responses to these common questions.

Know about the company! Go on their website and find out what they are all about. Look at the company’s mission statement and values.

Have a list of questions prepared to ask your interviewer. The hypothetical scenario I always give my candidates is “if you were asked to start this job tomorrow- what would you need to know from them so that you could go in tomorrow and work on this project?   Those are the questions you want to ask. Ask about the team, project, environment and anything else you think is relevant (but never rate!).

Print out a copy of the job description and a few extra copies of your resume for the interview - including one for yourself. Be prepared to speak on anything in your resume. While responding to questions, qualify yourself for the job. If you can look at the description and say “I’ve done that!” make sure it’s conveyed to your interviewer. As you respond to questions always keep the description in the back of your mind.

New scenario: You are in your interview. Maybe your palms are still sweating but you give your interviewer a confident smile and a firm handshake. You brought a bottle of water and some great notes. You are prepared. You reference your notes to jog your memory, you have a list of great questions to ask, and you know all about the company. Now you can go in there and get that job!
