Just a couple of months back I shared my perspective on video resumes. Wasn’t a big fan way back then.
A few weeks ago, I learned of the VisualCV product, its features and applications. And within days, ironically, was being solicited to join the Heidrick & Struggles “resume revolution” based on this tool.
So, with increasingly simple ways to integrate new media into one’s professional summary and have “controlled” online exposure/access, it is becoming clearer to me that the notion of a “video resume” is not all bad, just maybe not the total picture. Now, blend that personal brand management with the social and professional networking revolution upon us. On the one hand you have your 18-year-old son telling you it’s “creepy” that you created a Facebook page - it’s his personal, private networking space for gosh sakes! On the other, you have progressive job boards such as CareerBuilder establishing unique presence and networks in such an environment.
Hmmm, now my college-bound son can get real help thru Facebook when it comes searching for that first internship or job upon graduation. But more to a natural evolution, his network of friends focused totally on “silly” social things will become professional business contacts offering real value in pursuit of his career aspirations.
Somehow, I think the online social and professional networking worlds will soon merge into one - maybe they already have. And maybe I’ll change my mind about that. Soon. Maybe not.
Still trying to grasp this phenomenon and its implications for our business. I think the best strategy right now is to participate and learn. IT pros are living it, so let me hear your thoughts and reactions.
