Twitter, the ubiquitous if sometimes fragile micro-blogging and social networking platform, has quickly established itself as a mainstay component of the Web 2.0 revolution. According to the Twitterfacts Blog, the Twitosphere is growing at a rate of nearly 100,000 new users per month. The Twitter user and search directory, TwitDir, catalogues near 2.5 million individual users.
Rapid growth comes with a cost, however, as evidenced by the amount of Twitter downtime tracked by Royal Pingdom. Many a Twitter user has logged in to deliver their latest Tweet, Twaunt or Twis only to be met with the “FailWhale” graphic…the universal aquatic harbinger of system downtime.Sometimes the system is down because a new service causes the system to go haywire. Other times the system has been simply overloaded. My personal favorite is the obvious, if uninformative, error message: Something is technically wrong.
Technically, that’s right.
