Facebook and Your Career - Grow Up!

I’m amused by all of the recent blog banter regarding the pro’s and con’s of friending your boss. Here’s what a teammate wrote on my wall last year shortly after I had established my Facebook and was looking to friend . . .

What do you do when your boss friends you on Facebook?
a) Ignore it until he thinks his email got lost in your junk bin
b) Give him only a limited profile
c) Hide all of those compromising photos, status updates, and wall posts
d) Tell him “eeewwww” like his son and daughter probably did
e) Friend him and send him a virtual apple to show all of your coworkers in the network what a brown-noser you are.

C’mon people. The answer is soooo…obvious. The apple is on its way.

While one’s age and career stage undoubtedly influence perspectives, I have a simple view, similar to Ali Riaz. The lines between personal, social and professional relationships have clearly blurred in the virtual world.  So, regardless of Facebook options and privacy laws, we’re living in a transparent web world.  If you choose to participate, learn to behave accordingly, such as:

  • Apply the ‘ol email principle - assume anyone might ultimately see your message
  • keep the webcam out of the bedroom
  • don’t fret about party pix and profanity - we’ve all been there and can relate

And if you’re still uncomfortable, here you go!

  1. Can your clients be your Facebook friends?

What do you do when your client friends you on Facebook? Do you choose to accept with a limited profile, do you make up an alias profile and can you decline the invite?
