Throughout my career I’ve lived everywhere from Chicago, to Detroit, to Ohio and all over Texas and worked in many industries from IT to healthcare and mortgage. While the hardest challenge was changing industries, I used the experience to figure out which region and which industry I liked the most and then made my move to that end. Now being successful in each industry and market… there’s the challenge.
You’re probably thinking, “OK, so this person has been every where and seen everything, but what’s the point?” Well the point is that in my moving from place to place, I’ve found one common answer to being successful, and it’s pretty simple: listen.
No matter what the industry or what part of the U.S. you’re in, I’ve always found that listening helps seal the deal. It puts you in control. If you really listen to what a client/potential client/interviewer is asking, you’ll know how to respond, be able to show your genuine concern or interest and begin building a strong relationship. Listening leads to trust and no one wants to buy from or hire someone they don’t trust-a simple fact we sometimes forget.
So I say to all those out there trying to get ahead or be successful: “Good luck, take chances, make changes and don’t forget to listen!”
